How to Store Firewood Properly

Even the best firewood won’t perform well if it’s not stored correctly. Whether you’ve bought ultra kiln dried logs or well-seasoned wood, moisture is always trying to creep back in — especially in the UK.

At The Logsmith, we supply our ultra kiln dried logs in clean, compact cardboard boxes designed to make storage simple. Here’s how to keep your firewood in perfect condition, from delivery to burn.

Why correct storage matters

Firewood naturally absorbs moisture from the air, even after it’s been properly dried. If it’s stored in a damp area or directly on the ground, it can quickly start to reabsorb water — reducing burn quality and increasing smoke, steam and soot.

That’s why our logs arrive in sturdy, recyclable boxes. Each one is fully breathable, designed to protect the wood from damp and dust, and can be stored neatly indoors or out without mess or hassle.

Best storage locations

The key to storing firewood is airflow. You want a dry, ventilated space with protection from direct rain or snow. That might be:

  • An outdoor log store with a roof and slatted sides

  • A sheltered porch or covered lean-to

  • A garage or shed with good ventilation

  • A utility space, boot room or kitchen corner indoors

Our boxes are perfect for all of the above. They measure 21.4cm high, 39.1cm wide and 26cm deep — so they’re easy to carry, easy to stack, and small enough to tuck into almost any space. No tipping, no loose logs, and no need to handle them again until you’re ready to light the fire.

How to stack and store Logsmith boxes

Our packaging is designed to stack securely. Whether you’re storing 2 or 20 boxes, simply:

  • Keep them on a dry surface (pallet, shelf, crate or tiles)

  • Stack them safely, no higher than shoulder height for easy access

  • Leave a small gap around the stack if indoors, to allow airflow

  • Keep them away from direct heat sources like radiators or boilers

If you’re storing them outside temporarily, just keep them under cover — in a woodshed, garage, log store, or behind a windproof barrier with overhead protection.

Can I bring boxes inside?

Yes. Our boxes are clean, fully recyclable and presentable enough to store indoors — ideal for keeping a few days’ worth of logs next to your fire, stove or kindling basket.

Bringing firewood inside before use can help it adjust to room temperature, especially in colder months. This makes it easier to light and helps you avoid unnecessary moisture.

How long will the logs stay dry?

When stored properly in their original packaging, our kiln dried logs will stay in ideal condition for many months. Just avoid prolonged exposure to rain or direct contact with damp ground. If the outer box gets damaged or soaked, transfer the logs to a dry box or ventilated log basket to allow them to breathe.

What not to do

  • Don’t store firewood directly on wet concrete, bare soil or grass

  • Don’t wrap the boxes or logs tightly in plastic — moisture gets trapped

  • Don’t block in your stack completely — ventilation is essential

  • Don’t leave boxes exposed to driving rain or melting snow

  • Don’t overload high stacks — store at a safe, accessible height
