How to Use a Swedish Torch

A Swedish torch is one of the simplest and most satisfying ways to enjoy a fire. There’s no need for kindling or complicated setups — just one specially prepared log that acts as its own stove, fire pit, and ambient light source.

Also known as a Canadian candle or one-log stove, this centuries-old fire method is perfect for outdoor cooking, creating a cosy garden feature, or just enjoying a slow, steady burn with minimal effort.

What Is a Swedish Torch?

A Swedish torch is a single log that has been vertically cut to allow air to flow through and a flame to burn from the inside out. At The Logsmith, we use low-moisture birch and kiln-dry each log to under 20% moisture for easy lighting and a clean, efficient burn.

Each log measures 23–28cm in diameter and 18cm high — ideal for a self-contained fire that lasts up to two hours, depending on conditions and wind.

How to Light a Swedish Torch

To light, place the log upright on a fireproof surface. Drop a natural firelighter into the central cut at the top and ignite it. Within minutes, the flame will start to rise and draw air through the log’s vertical channels, creating a chimney effect that fuels the fire from within.

No kindling or stacking required — just one torch, one firelighter, and you’re good to go.

Why Use One?

Swedish torches offer a brilliant mix of simplicity and function. They’re compact, easy to transport, and perfect for use when you don’t want the mess or setup of a full fire pit. They give off great heat and burn steadily, producing very little ash and no loose sparks.

They’re also incredibly versatile. You can use them as:

  • A standalone campfire

  • A makeshift cooking stove

  • A warm centrepiece for patios or gatherings

  • A practical solution for glamping, hot tubs, and saunas

Can You Cook on a Swedish Torch?

Yes — and that’s one of the best things about them. The flat top becomes stable as the flame develops, allowing you to place a pan or kettle right on top. Whether it’s boiling water for coffee, heating soup, or frying a quick camp breakfast, a Swedish torch works like a built-in burner.

They're ideal for campsite cooking, impromptu picnics, or adding a rustic touch to your BBQ setup.

Where Can You Use One?

Swedish torches are suitable for almost any outdoor space:

  • Campsites and picnic areas

  • Garden patios and fire-safe terraces

  • Outdoor kitchens and BBQ zones

  • Narrowboat decks and canal moorings

  • Forest clearings or wild camping sites

They also make a thoughtful gift for outdoor enthusiasts or those looking for a low-fuss way to enjoy firelight at home.
