Most firewood on the market still comes in plastic netting. It’s cheap, convenient, and widely used — but at The Logsmith, we’ve made a conscious choice to do things differently.
We don’t use plastic nets. We never have. And we don’t plan to start.
Here’s why we deliver all of our firewood in strong, recyclable cardboard boxes — and why it makes a difference for your fire, your home and the environment.
Plastic nets are a problem
Plastic mesh bags might look harmless, but they’re part of a much bigger issue. They’re almost never recyclable in kerbside bins, they break down into microplastics, and they often end up in landfill — or worse, in waterways and green spaces.
According to WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme), the UK generates around 2.4 million tonnes of plastic packaging waste every year. Single-use plastic like firewood nets contributes to that figure unnecessarily, especially when there are better alternatives available.
We believe firewood packaging should match the sustainability of the product itself — not undo the good.
Our recyclable alternative
All Logsmith firewood is delivered in FSC-certified, recyclable cardboard boxes. These are made from responsibly sourced materials, designed to protect your logs in transit and storage, and can be:
-
Stacked neatly in log stores, garages, or indoors
-
Burned once empty (they’re chemical-free and safe for stoves or fire pits)
-
Recycled in household paper and cardboard collections
-
Stored without splitting, ripping or tangling
The box dimensions — 21.4cm high, 39.1cm wide and 26cm deep — make them easy to carry and compact enough to stack almost anywhere. They’re also clean and tidy enough to bring inside, which you can’t do with damp or dusty net bags.
Better for storage, cleaner for your home
Plastic nets let debris, bark and dust fall through in transit or while stored. They’re often stacked loosely on pallets, making them awkward to store neatly once opened. They don’t protect logs from moisture, and they certainly don’t look great sitting by your fireplace.
Our boxes are sealed, stable and neat — keeping your logs clean and dry until you’re ready to burn them. No piles of wood shavings, no sharp netting edges, no loose bundles tipping over.
No plastic, no compromise
We haven’t just avoided plastic nets — we’ve rethought how firewood is packaged. Our logs come in clean, recyclable cardboard boxes that protect the wood and reduce unnecessary waste. Every box is stackable, easy to store, and safe to burn or recycle when empty.
While some commercial deliveries may require protective materials during transit, our everyday packaging is 100% plastic-free — designed with both the customer and the environment in mind. And because everything is packed to be secure and manageable, it’s not just better for the planet — it’s easier for you too.
